Why the same prompt gives different results
Gemini and ChatGPT do not apply your prompt like a filter. They redraw the picture each time, using your photo as a reference, and the words decide how strictly they follow it. That is why two runs of the same text can give you two different noses, and why the face line sits at the top of every prompt here, not buried after a long description of a saree.
Skin tone is the detail that drifts most often for Indian faces. Retro colour grading pulls everything warm and bright, and the models have seen a lot of fair-skinned retro glamour, so a result can come back a shade or two lighter. Saying “do not lighten my skin” in plain words helps a lot. Group and couple photos drift more than solo ones, because the model has to hold several faces at once.
Fixes for the usual problems
The face looks like someone else
Reply: “The face must match my original photo exactly. Keep everything else, redo only the face.” If it still drifts, start a new chat and attach a closer, brighter photo.
Skin came out lighter
Reply: “Keep my exact skin tone from the original photo; do not lighten or smooth the skin.”
It looks modern, not 80s
Usually the print is too clean. Reply: “Add visible film grain, faded warm colours, slight softness and a hard direct flash shadow.”
The saree looks like fancy dress
Name less: one fabric, one colour, one border. Long lists of jewellery push the model towards bridal costume.
A phone, logo or text appears
Add “no modern objects, no text, no watermark” at the end and run it again.
Gemini will not edit the photo
Image features and limits vary by account and change over time. Check that the photo is in the same message, try later, or try ChatGPT.
Writing your own 80s look prompt
If none of the seven fits, keep the same order: the face line, the hair, one outfit, the place, then the camera and the print. “A Bajaj Chetak scooter parked behind me” works; “lots of vintage Indian things” gives you a cluttered museum set.
When the app is the easier route
Prompts are the right tool when the outfit matters: a kasavu saree for Onam, a specific colour, a scooter in the frame.
