When Is the Best Week for a Maternity Photoshoot?

Too early and the bump barely shows. Too late and standing for an hour is miserable. Here is the window photographers actually book.

The Short Answer

The best time for a maternity photoshoot is usually between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, and most photographers suggest aiming for 30–34 weeks. By then the bump is clearly round and high, but you can still stand, walk and change poses without discomfort, and you are comfortably ahead of an early arrival.

If you are expecting twins or multiples, or have been told your baby may come early, move the session forward to around 24–30 weeks. Every pregnancy is different, so treat these as planning guidelines rather than medical advice, and follow whatever your midwife or doctor recommends about activity late in pregnancy.

How to Plan the Timing

1

Book for 30–34 weeks

Reserve the slot early in the second trimester; good photographers fill up months ahead.

2

Choose the time of day

The hour before sunset gives the softest outdoor light. Indoors, mid-morning window light is the easiest to work with.

3

Keep a backup plan

If the session slips past 36 weeks, or you simply run out of energy, FaceCast turns a single phone photo into a full studio-style maternity set in the app.

Why 30–34 Weeks Works

At 30–34 weeks the bump has the classic full, rounded shape that reads clearly in photos from every angle, especially in profile. Earlier bumps often look ambiguous on camera even when they feel obvious in the mirror.

It is also the last stretch where most people feel steady on their feet. Swelling, back pain and tiredness usually increase after 36 weeks, and a photoshoot involves far more standing, kneeling and repositioning than people expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What week should I do maternity photos?+

Most photographers recommend 30–34 weeks, within a broader 28–36 week window. The bump is clearly round and you are still comfortable enough for a full session.

Is 36 weeks too late for a maternity shoot?+

Not necessarily, and the bump is at its fullest. Many people feel tired and swollen by then, though, so keep the session short and plan seated poses. Any later carries a real chance the baby arrives first.

When should twins maternity photos be taken?+

Earlier than a single pregnancy: around 24–30 weeks. The bump grows faster and twins commonly arrive before 37 weeks.

What if I missed the window or cannot afford a photographer?+

FaceCast creates studio-quality maternity portraits from one simple photo of you — different backdrops, outfits and lighting styles, generated in the app. It is free to download on iOS and Android.

What should I wear for maternity photos?+

Fitted or flowing fabrics that show the bump’s shape, in solid colours or soft patterns. Avoid busy prints and logos; they pull attention from the silhouette.
