Does Your Baby Actually Look Like the Ultrasound?
Sometimes the resemblance is uncanny. Sometimes the newborn looks like a different child entirely. Both are completely normal — here is why.

The Short Answer
A 3D ultrasound captures the real shape of your baby’s face — the profile, the nose, the chin, the set of the lips — so the underlying structure is genuinely theirs. Many parents do recognise their newborn from the scan, especially in profile. But the scan is a surface reconstruction made through fluid and tissue, so fine detail, colouring and expression are not captured at all.
The bigger reason for a mismatch is that babies change enormously in the last weeks and during birth itself. Swelling, moulding of the skull during delivery, fat gained after the scan and simply opening their eyes all change the face. A scan at 28 weeks is an honest picture of a baby who still has weeks of growing to do.
What a Scan Captures Well — and What It Cannot
Captured well: profile and structure
Nose shape, chin, brow and lip outline are real measurements of your baby.
Captured poorly: fine detail
Skin texture, eyelashes and subtle expression are beyond what the reconstruction resolves.
Not captured at all: colour
Ultrasound has no colour information. Any tint you see is added by the rendering software.
Changes after the scan
Weight gain, birth swelling and skull moulding all reshape the face after the image was taken.
Why Some Scans Look Uncannily Accurate
When a scan happens in the ideal window, with the baby facing the probe and fluid in front of the face, the reconstruction can be strikingly faithful to the bone structure. Those are the scans parents hold up next to a newborn photo in disbelief.
When the baby is pressed against the placenta or turned away, the software fills in a surface from partial data. The result can look distorted or squashed — not because of the baby, but because of what the sound waves could reach.
